Artist: Gary Willis
Gary Willis began exhibiting in the seventies, working in a variety of media, painting, photography, performance and video art. He was included in the 1979 and 1982 Sydney Biennales and has shown at the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Gallery of Australia, Reconnaissance Gallery Melbourne, Roslyn Oxley Gallery Sydney, the Musee D’Art Moderne Paris, and a plethora of other gallery and non gallery spaces around the world. He was awarded the Australia Council London studio and a residency at the Delfina Studios in Andalucía, Spain. He has lived in Sydney, New York and London where he worked under the patronage of Arthur Boyd. He has a Masters degree from RMIT University and a PhD from Melbourne University. Gary now lives and works in Melbourne.
Gary Willis has chronicled the first ten years of his life in his autobiographical book “Diary of a Dead Beat Modern Art Type. 1972-1982” It’s is a great read which not only bares the soul of the artist in vivid detail but also paints a richly detailed picture of the times.
