Artist: Jon Cattapan
Jon Cattapan was born in 1956, and currently lives and works in Melbourne. His paintings and works on paper have been widely exhibited throughout Australia and overseas. His work is held in numerous public, state, regional and private collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Queensland Art Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
Jon Cattapan has been described as a poet of the floating metropolis for his beautiful panoramic city vistas. He pursues relentlessly his vision of cities as nameless, but universal places crackling with data and stories.
Large and layered, his recent painterly canvases speak to the collective experience of living in urban spaces. From images of resistance to haunting anonymous displaced groups we see unfolding narratives that can be read as barometers of 'our globalised condition'.
Cattapan pictures modern life as a data drizzle falling over the narratives contained in his submerged 'noir' cities. Cattapan's paintings offer a language of the urban and deliver both psychological and political dimensions.
