Arriving to the vast desert plains in New Mexico provided a welcome relief to photographer Miriam Johnson after growing up in the dense, mountainous island of Tasmania. Her attraction to large, open space is evident in her body of work that spans seemingly endless horizons of the desert to the Urban landscape of New York. Although visually very different, Johnson finds a similarity between the energy and vibe of such environments and is compelled to create and capture this experience through her images.

Miriam Johnson was born in New York, USA and raised in Hobart, Australia. Johnson completed her Bachelor of Fine Art at the Centre for the Arts, University of Tasmania, Australia in 1990, undertook Graduate Studies in Photography at the University of New Mexico, USA in 1993 and studied 16mm Film-making at the New York Film Academy, NY, USA in 1994. Miriam Johnson currently lives in New York.
