Gary Willis has done it all, from ground breaking performance and video art in the seventies to painting in practically every genre- hard edged abstraction, expressionism, realism, whatever was required at the time. He has shown extensively in Australia as well as New York, London, Paris and Tokyo. He has been included in the Sydney Biennale twice and has work in the National Gallery of Australia. He has been a Buddhist monk and a New York punk, a curator, an author, a teacher and an academic. He has rubbed shoulders with the likes of Arthur Boyd, John Cage, Carl Andre, he even rates a mention in the Diaries of Andy Warhol.
Artinfo went to his Brunswick studio for a chat about his lifelong devotion to art, we managed to cover the first twenty years before the tape ran out…

Gary Willis began exhibiting in the seventies, working in a variety of media, painting, photography, performance and video art. He was included in the 1979 and 1982 Sydney Biennales and has shown at the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Gallery of Australia, Reconnaissance Gallery Melbourne, Roslyn Oxley Gallery Sydney, the Musee D’Art Moderne Paris, and a plethora of other gallery and non gallery spaces around the world.
